Daily Lineup

In Honor of Derby Week

The Kentucky Derby

Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby first ran on May 17, 1875, and Churchill Downs has been its home ever since. Together with Kentucky Oaks the day before, these are the oldest continuously held sporting events in American history. Known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports," the race will bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to our city and has become one of the most recognizable sporting events in the world.

For locals, Derby is less about the two-minute race and more about the weeks of celebration, the smell of bourbon in the air, and the sense of pride that comes with sharing something truly ours with the rest of the world. For one weekend a year, a neighborhood racetrack in our South End becomes the center of the sports world.

Some of us live for this week. Some of us just survive it. Either way, it is ours. And we hope you enjoy it.
